Rev. Rocco Puopolo, SX, Executive Director
AFJN welcomes its new executive director in the person of Fr. Rocco Puopolo, a Xaverian Missionary. Originally from Norwood, Massachusetts, Rocco was ordained in 1977 and has since ministered extensively in Sierra Leone as well as in the US Midwest. During his twelve years in Sierra Leone he was involved in high school teaching, village evangelization and development, administration of diocesan schools as well as various youth chaplaincy responsibilities. In his final assignment in Sierra Leone he worked as director of the National Pastoral Center in Kenema. In the United States, Rocco has done both seminary training, youth retreats and advocacy work in Milwaukee, Chicago and Washington, DC. While in Chicago he worked with Archdiocesan Muslim/Christian Dialogue groups. On leave from Sierra Leone in 1997, he offered his time and experience of the war to AFJN and spent substantial time in DC advocating for a just and fair approach to the conflict there. The main issues addressed through Rocco's advocacy were the situation of child soldiers, the drug trade, the small arms trade and the diamond trade. Beth Tuckey, Associate Director, Program Development and Policy
A recent graduate of Kenyon College in Ohio, Beth completed a B.A. degree in International Studies with a focus on politics and anthropology in Africa. Though her first visit to the continent of Africa was brief (ten days on the plains of Tanzania), Beth followed her intrigue and spent three and a half months studying in Uganda with the School for International Training. Her field research focused on school feeding programs and their effect on education in the eastern districts of Mbale and Budadiri. During her time in East Africa, Beth also took interest in the conflict in northern Uganda and the reconciliation process occurring in Rwanda. These experiences, along with her work with the Uganda Conflict Action Network, led her to complete her senior research at Kenyon on internally displaced persons in northern Uganda and their prospects for successful reintegration. Beth came to AFJN for the first time in the summer of 2006 as an intern and has returned to continue the work of peace and justice transformation in Africa. Email: bethtuckey(at)afjn.org.
Bahati Ntama Jacques, Policy Analyst
Bahati joins AFJN as a staff member from Chicago. He is originally from Goma in the North Kivu province
of the Democratic
Republic of the Congo.
In 1996-2000 he witnessed the invasion of the DRC by Rwanda,
Burundi and Uganda
and worked in the field of post-war relief. He is
the confounder of Association des vieullards Abondonnes (AVA) that addressed
the increased number of elderly bagging on the streets of Bukavu during the
long war in DRC. He holds a an
undergraduate degree in Philosophy (2000) from La Ruzzi in Bukavu/DRC, a Masters
of Divinity (2006) and Masters of Arts in Ethics (2007) from Catholic
Theological Union in Chicago. Bahati has a wide experience in pastoral
ministry with youth in parishes and in jail in Chicago. He just finished four units of clinical pastoral education at
Christ Medical
Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois. For more than a year, Bahati has been working as an intern with Africa Faith and Justice
