Eye on The Western Sahara - A Talk with Sahrawi Human Rights Defender Aminatou Haidar

When: Monday November 17, 2008 from 4:15-6:00 PM

Where: Methodist Building; 100 Maryland Avenue, NE; Conference Room 1

Refreshments will be served.

Please join the Institute for Policy Studies, Africa Faith and Justice Network, and the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights (RFK Center) in welcoming the 2008 RFK Human Rights Award Laureate, Aminatou Haidar, at a public talk on human rights and women in the struggle for justice in Western Sahara.  Ms. Haidar will speak about challenges she has encountered in her work as a human rights defender and address issues raised during the Moroccan truth-seeking experience over the past several years, notably the failures of the Moroccan Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) to address the human rights abuses and grievances of victims in the Western Sahara.

In addition to commenting on her activism and the Moroccan IER, Ms. Haidar will also share her thoughts on how redress, truth, and justice are challenged in zones marked by contested national identities, border disputes, and "security" issues.
