The Pope Wants Justice for Africa
General
Friday, 27 April 2007

The cover of Pope Benedict XVI's new bookThe continent of Africa is getting a healthy dose of attention from Pope Benedict XVI. The Pope's new book, Jesus of Nazareth, has been written about quite widely in the international press, especially for what the Pontiff has said about Africa. John Allen, of the National Catholic Reporter notes that Pope Benedict has used the word, Africa, even more times than the word, sex. And that, in spite of writing an encyclical on human erotic love.

In celebration of his 80th birthday, the Pope released the book that is a meditation on the life of Jesus with an eye on the current situation in the world. In particular, he uses the parable of the Good Samaritan to discuss what is happening with his African sisters and brothers today. Benedict states that the impoverished countries of the world have been plundered and sacked and that their oppressors have brought with them a the 'cynicism of a world without God.'

Nigerian Bishops Speak Out About Elections
Church In Africa
Wednesday, 25 April 2007
In the person of their chairman, Bishop Felix Alaba Job, the Nigerian Bishops' Conference stated that Ngeria had failed to conduct free, fair and credible elections.  Citing several examples of mismanagement of the elections, Bishop Job stated that the people had been robbed of their chance to choose their leaders.  Yet, the Bishops prefer that people not go into the streets but into the courts to rectify the situation.  AJFN will post any official statement that the Bishops or Justice and Peace Commissions of Nigeria may produce.  In the meantime, further information can be found at allAfrica.com and the BBC News Africa service.

Martin, who lost his life in Nairobi on March 10, 2007, was only one of many victims of violence that the Religious Superiors Conference of Kenya deplored in a recent statement. They call for all Kenyans to search their souls, to rediscover the power of the word in resolving conflicts and for all levels of inequalities to be addressed in Kenyan society. We wish to share this statement with you in its entirety.

Holy See Calls for Action on Trade Justice
Trade Reform
Monday, 23 October 2006
Speaking at the United Nations last week, the Vatican Ambassador, Archbishop Celestino Migliore, reminded the assembly that the need for an agreement on trade issues is ' a moral imperative that cannot be delayed.'  Using the words of Paul VI, the Archbishop reiterated the Holy See's concern for the achievement of greater justice through fair trade.  "Freedom of trade is fair only if it is subject to the demands of social justice," (Paul VI, Populorum progressio, n.59).   The Holy See refuses to give up on the WTO (World Trade Organization) but expresses the need to 'better the institution, declaring that a comprehensive settlement of trade issues in the WTO  would be far better for developing countries than regional trade agreements.  All States were invited to 'make the necessary sacrifices for the establishment of more just trade relations.'
