Policy Brief and Renewed Advocacy for Northern Uganda
Commentary
Thursday, 03 May 2007

Peter Quaranto, of Uganda Conflict Action Network (UgandaCan) just published a policy brief on the situation in northern Uganda that can be found at this website .

Also, UgandaCAN, including former AFJN staffer, Michael Poffenberge, and AFJN intern, Desiree Fair, has recently launched a new campaign entitled, ‘Resolve Uganda’, which aims to unite all the efforts of citizens concerned about the crisis in northern Uganda and offer even more opportunities to take action.

The website was recently launched as a 'work in progress.' It will provide visitors a variety of ways of getting involved in the effort to raise the profile of the conflict in northern Uganda and hopefully facilitate a rapid and peaceful resolution to the violence and the displacement of people.

Peace on the Horizon in Northern Uganda
News
Monday, 26 March 2007

2008 has gotten off to a difficult start in much of Africa. With the post-election violence in Kenya, escalating conflict in eastern D.R. Congo, ongoing suffering in Darfur, Chad, Cameroon, and Somalia, the challenge of advocating for peace can seem daunting. Voices of happiness and hope tend to be drowned out by the media’s focus on the devastation happening in Africa and around the world. At the end of February, the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) signed the final agenda item of a framework for peace and reconstruction that may finally bring an end to the 22-year conflict.

Nikki Giovanni Ties Uganda to Virginia Tech
Commentary
Monday, 19 February 2007
We wanted to share with you a commentary by our friends at UgandaCan concerning the recent massacre at Virginia Tech University. They speak about Virginia Tech professor and poet, Nikki Giovanni's, eloquent address to the recent memorial gathering on the campus. Ms Giovanni said, "We do not understand this tragedy. We know we did not deserve it but neither does a child in Africa dying of AIDS, but neither do the invisible children walking the night to avoid being captured by a rogue army...No one deserves a tragedy."
The vulnerability felt by college students in America today is the daily reality of students in some parts of Africa and certainly in Iraq and Afghanistan. We can sit down and weep and leave it at that. Or, we can continue to work in faith for greater justice not only on US college campuses but in Africa and the rest of the world. AFJN wants to work. Please follow the link to see what UgandaCan plans to do. And you?
