UN Security Council Passes Statement Welcoming Juba Talks

On Thursday, the 15 members of the UN Security Council passed a statement that says the the Council "welcomes efforts aimed at bringing an end to the long-running conflict in northern Uganda, and is following closely the Juba talks process." Though not a definitive statement of support, this shows that the Security Council realizes the stakes and opportunities of these peace talks. The Security Council urges the peace process to be "completed expeditiously."

Museveni Says ICC Indictments Will Stay Until Peace Agreement Signed

President Museveni has insisted that the International Criminal Court (ICC) should maintain its arrest warrants against LRA top commanders until a peace agreement is signed. "The ICC is actually very good for us (Uganda) because it makes the terrorists (rebels) come up to seek peace and end impunity. ICC was created to fight impunity," Museveni said at the general meeting of the East African Law Society.

Northern Uganda Lobby Day Major Success

Over 700 activists from 40 states traveled to Washington, D.C. on October 11-12, 2006 for the Northern Uganda Lobby Day and Symposium.  On the first day, participants heard from experts about the causes, history, humanitarian costs, and future of the conflict 20-year conflict in Northern Uganda.  Participants then used this information to lobby Congressional Staffers about the need for U.S. support for the Juba Peace Process and humanitarian assistance.  Africa Faith and Justice Network, the primary organizer of the event, encourages its members to continue lobbying their Congressional representatives on these issues as we move towards peace in Northern Uganda.  For more information about the Lobby Days, read the full story in The Washington Post .
