Historic Northern Uganda Peace Talks to Begin Print E-mail

In the last two months, the politics surrounding northern Uganda have undergone an unexpected whirlwind. This week, peace talks between the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and Government of Uganda are set to begin, mediated by the Government of South Sudan. At the beginning of this month, Ugandan President Museveni announced that he would grant amnesty to LRA leadership if a peace agreement is reached by the deadline of 12 September. Top LRA leadership, though declining to appear at the talks, has accepted the amnesty offer. With the backing of the Southern Sudanese, the scrutiny of the world and the buy-in of key stakeholders, these peace talks may be the best opportunity to end the war in over a decade!
