Sudan is a country riddled with conflict and poverty and government neglect has only exacerbated the problems.  In 2003, Darfurian rebels led an uprising against the Sudanese government. Since then the people of Darfur have suffered under the government-supported Janjaweed militia.

Innocent civilians have been subjected to rape, organized starvation, the mass killing of 400,00 people and the displacement of more than 2.5 million people. Thousands of people are killed in Darfur each month by disease, war and displacement.  The government in Khartoum has continued to neglect the situation.

The United States government has officially recognized the crisis in Darfur as gencocide, but like many other nations has done little to stop the violence. The African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Darfur has been assigned to protect the people, but the mission lacks the resources and numbers to adequately address this issue.  Recent steps being taken by the US government towards a possible UN peacekeeping mission are very positive but have yet to make any difference on the ground.  The people of Darfur are still suffering.
