Policies for People in Sudan |
|
|
|
To bring an immediate halt to genocidal violence in Sudan's western
region of Darfur and contribute to peacebuilding and democratic
development throughout the country, the United States has a crucial
role to play.
The U.S. government should:
- Appoint a Presidential Envoy to Sudan to encourage
implementation of the North/South Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement
signed in January of 2005 and the Darfur Peace Agreement signed in June
2006, and to coordinate U.S. policy toward the region.
- Fully fund current African Union peacekeeping operations.
- Provide
funding for humanitarian relief to ensure that displaced populations
and returning refugees have access to livelihood opportunities.
- Use
its voice and vote at the U.N. Security Council to attain a transition
from African Union to U.N. peacekeepers as soon as possible.
- Maintain targeted economic sanctions on Sudan until the Government of Sudan
demonstrates a clear shift in mentality toward inclusive and democratic
governance that respects basic human rights.
- Pressure the Government of Sudan with diplomatic and
economic means to accept democratic reforms and work toward national unity and
reconciliation.
